Dessert places are popping up in Adelaide as frequently as Fonzie’s thumbs in an episode of Happy Days. Eeeeyyyyyy!! With so much ground to cover it’s good to make sure you know which ones are worth a visit. St Louis House of Fine Ice Cream & Dessert, Gouger Street’s new lead character is exactly that - well worth the visit and well worth the calories.
Waltzing into St Louis (because who doesn't love a good waltz?) you are instantly relaxed and excited about what’s to come. With the stark white walls and dark wooden bookshelves filled with ol’ school reads this place is unlike the cookie cutter café’s that one has become accustom to. This place reeks of the bold personal style of someone who has just that…. style. It’s not showy or kitschy… it’s just a stylish place you want to be in! And while we are talking about what St Louis reeks of, is there a better smell than vintage books and hot waffles? Possibly the smell of cooked bacon and Alexander Skarsgard’s sweat, but unfortunately it’s unlikely that these nostrils will ever get a whiff of that delectable combo. *tear*
Finding a spot outside on a pleasant Tuesday evening we wrapped ourselves in soft blankets (provided by the Saint himself!) and flipped through the extensive menu. More like a novel that will make your heart beat faster than 50 Shades of Grey! There is so much to choose from that everyone will find something they can’t wait to get all up in. St Louis offers crepes, waffles, churros, brownies, sundaes and fondues just to name a few. They also have an impressive drinks menu, breakfast items and great coffee if you are just dashing past. How could you go wrong?
First up we went with some chocolatey liquids to get the party started. My dessert bud went with the signature hot chocolate which was nothing short of perfection with a melted chocolate rimmed cup and a cute little marshmallow! This had to be just as good, if not better than the hot chocolates we had at Chocolate No.5 a few months back.
I went with the white chocolate shot which was straight up melted couverture chocolate bliss. There is something so wrong, yet so right about drinking pure chocolate. I’m going to go with mostly right though. Mmm hmm!
If you’re finding it hard to choose just one of the many sweet treats on offer then go for a dessert creation. I went with the Ohh La La Chocolate! which comprised of the cutest little chocolate shake, a brownie that was rich and moist like you would not believe and a scoop of French vanilla ice-cream.
The difference between a good dessert and an oh-my-god-hold-me-I-might-pass-out-from-the-pleasure dessert is the ice-cream. A great dessert with poor quality ice-cream is like a babe-alicious boy wearing white sunglasses and a billabong t-shirt. Stop, you’re ruining it! Although St Louis isn’t strictly an ice-cream place, they undeniably have some of the best ice-cream in town. All you have to do is take one lick of their salted caramel to know that I am not overstating!
My dessert companion went with the Strawberry Nutella Crepe which she inhaled with the gusto of a person lost in the woods for three days. Suffice to say: it was all kinds of amazing.
So next time your sweet tooth is calling make a b-line for St Louis on Gouger Street. This is a decision that you will not regret! Oh and by the way… I saw that Chocolateria San Churro just opened up a few doors down. With similar menu items I was worried that they would steal customers from the little guy but once I went to St Louis I wasn't so worried anymore. No comparison!
Until next time… Stay Rad-elaide.
