Munching in Magill

Well it's suburban surprise week and last night I ventured over to Magill Road to check out another Mexican Restaurant which people just can’t stop talking about, Maiz & Mezcal.

As soon as I stepped my feet through the doors of this lovely eatery I was instantly in a good mood. The Mexican music, the beautiful vibrant colours, it truly was a pleasure from the get go, and I had my fingers crossed that the food would meet the high standard set by the pleasing atmosphere and décor. When we sat down a member of the wait staff came over and explained that most of the items are small and good to share. After that, like horses out of the gate, we were off and racing!

There were a lot of words I didn’t quite understand as English is not the only language on the menu so the ordering process was similar to playing a game of pin the tail on the donkey, or pin the hose on the fireman if your friends are a little more risqué. It was somewhat of a blind-point situation and we were marvellously excited about what was coming our way!

The dips were lo-lo-lovely. Super tasty, vibrant and fresh, accompanied with crisp and flavoursome corn chips. With an entrée this good I made the rookie mistake of going a little too hard on the starter, but please don't worry, I am a seasoned eater and was able to hold my own with the mains.

Speaking of mains, we went for a two person platter filled with Mexican goodness like grilled chicken, soft shell tacos, volcanoes and a few other bits and pieces. WHAT a platter. The authentic spices and crazy fresh ingredients took the food from your average Mexican fix to a high quality restaurant meal. There was none of the usual death-by-drowning with excessive condiment application… what a win!

For dessert we ordered a delicious baked cheesecake and an almond cake with poached pears which was moist like you would not believe. What a great way to finish off a fantastic meal! If only the company was better... Aw just kidding girls! Without a doubt this place has earned every bit of its rave and I will be back sooner rather than later. Just make sure you book because this place is as popular as Danny DeVito’s twitter page. Really people? Over 2 million followers? Ok, ok I loved Junior too, who am I kidding!

Until next time… Stay Rad-elaide.

  2. Ohhhh! How does it fair when compared to Lucky Lupitas (went over the weekend and didn't enjoy it so much >.<)?

    1. I enjoyed both but probably prefered Maiz & Mezcal because it was super authentic and crazy fresh. PLUS with less condiment and cheese smothering I didn't need to hire a wheelbarrow to get me to my car! haha
